Only Ourselves To Blame

Sean Davis confessed Pompey handed victory to Wolfsburg on a night of pain in Germany.
The Blues 3-2 defeat, combined with Braga’s victory at Heerenveen, means they cannot progress to the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.
Davis warned Pompey needed to sharpen up defensively now their focus is back in the Premier League – starting at West Brom on Sunday.
The midfielder believed the Blues gifted all three goals to Wolfsburg, who have qualifed from Group E along with AC Milan and Braga.
Pompey’s response to Edin Dzeko’s early strike, with goals from Jermain Defoe and Arnold Mvuemba, sent the 3,000 travelling fans delirious in a dramatic first 15 minutes at the Volkswagen Arena.
But then a Christian Gentner shot flew straight in before David James lost possession for Zvjezdan Misimovic to roll in Wolfsburg’s decisive third.
Davis said: “We’ve only got ourselves to blame. It’s hard to take with the goals we conceded.
“The two in the first half were terrible goals – you can’t win football matches if you let in goals like that.
“We’re scoring goals, but it proves if you don’t defend the right way, you won’t win.
“We’ve got to cut out the mistakes and stop giving away sloppy goals. We’ve got to buck up our ideas. We’re giving teams a chance. We’re not making them work for their goals.
“We should have beaten Wolfsburg. It’s such a shame, especially for our fans who have come here and packed it out. It’s upsetting.”
Davis believes Pompey have to show their mettle at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
He said: “We’ve got good character in the team, and this is where it’s going to be tested. We’ve all got to stick together.
“We’ve got a game straight away against West Brom, which is maybe a good thing. That’s a big game for us – we need to get something out of that game.
“We need to go there and be tight, even if that means coming away with a 0-0. We have to get back to picking up clean sheets like last season.”
