Mullins Eyes Another European Adventure

With Pompey sitting just three points above the Premier League drop-zone, you might expect the players to be looking nervously over their shoulders. But Hayden Mullins is only looking forward. The 29-year-old made his Blues debut in Tuesday’s narrow defeat to Aston Villa after completing his switch from West Ham on Monday morning. He produced an impressive display alongside Sean Davis in the heart of Pompey’s midfield and twice came close to scoring. It was not enough for the hosts to get something from the game but Mullins saw enough to believe that the future is bright for Tony Adams’ side. He feels that the quality in the Blues squad can help them get back into Europe – and he is not ruling out continental qualification this season. “The boys are experienced enough to know that there’s a long way to go this season,” said Mullins. “It’s such a tight league this year – I don’t think I’ve ever seen it closer than this at either end of the table. “There are good, quality players at this club – that’s why I came here. With the squad we’ve got we should be able to climb the table. “If we can string three wins together then we’ll be in the top half of the table and looking towards the European places. “That’s where we want to be at this club and with a lot of hard work we can achieve it. “This club played in Europe this season because of what they have achieved in the last few years and I think we can get there again.” Pompey travel to Fulham on Saturday, looking for their first Premier League victory since November 30. And Mullins feels the Blues should be confident ahead of the Craven Cottage clash. He said: “It’s realistic for us to go there and get a win. Hopefully we can go there and dictate the game, so it can be played the way we want it to be played. “We’ve got a very good team, so if we go there and do well then we can definitely take the three points. “The league is so tight and one or two wins just shoots you right up the table. You can move up four or five places with just one victory. “We have to keep that in mind and stay positive.”
