The Pride Of A City

The FA Cup will be paraded around Fratton Park before the game against Chelsea on Tuesday night. It will be a chance for supporters to wave farewell to the trophy before it is returned to the Football Association. The FA have been so pleased with Pompey’s custody of the cup that they have given the club an extra week with the trophy, allowing it to be paraded against Chelsea. In his notes in Tuesday night’s matchday programme, executive chairman Peter Storrie speaks about Pompey’s huge efforts to take the trophy out to the local community so people can share in the success. “We take great pride in how we have ensured that possibly more people than ever before have been able to see the cup while we have been holders,” he says. “More than 22,000 children have had their picture taken with the cup in 65 individual visits to Portsmouth schools. “Thousands more have done the same at numerous functions for the Royal Navy, Portsmouth City Council and the community as a whole throughout our reign. For us it was always important that everyone shared in our glory - and it has also enabled us to raise funds for worthy causes, too. “We know the FA have been delighted with our work with the cup and the reaction of you, the Portsmouth people, to our tenure as holders. “As a result they have given us this extra week to parade the trophy - so give it a good send-off against Chelsea.” Man-of-the-moment Hermann Hreidarsson is the cover star of the matchday programme. The defender, who inspired the last-gasp equalizer at Stoke and scored in the previous two games against Liverpool and Manchester City, explains the inner fire that makes him such an inspiring figure on the pitch. He says: “I’ve treated every season as if it was my last and that’s why I’ve always made the most of football. “This has never been a job to me and that’s why I feel so privileged.” Read the whole interview in Pompey’s matchday programme, priced £3.
