Ladies Look Forward To Hampshire Cup Final
Posted on March 27th, 2009 by Pompey
This weekend sees Pompey Ladies contesting the Hampshire Women’s Cup final at Westleigh Park.
They will face high-flying Havant and Waterlooville in a mouth-watering local derby.
Having won the cup four times in the last five years, Pompey are determined to get it back after being knocked out in the semi-final last season by eventual winners Bournemouth.
The Hawks currently sit top of the Southern Region League Premier Division – two leagues below the Blues. But Pompey manager Vanessa Raynbird is under no illusions as to the size of the challenge facing her team.
“Havant Waterlooville have a strong side and they are unbeaten in their league, so they won’t be an easy team to face,” she admitted.
“We’re looking forward to the game – we haven’t got far to travel and having two Portsmouth-based sides contesting the Hampshire Cup is very good for the area.
“They are one of our closest rivals and that does add an added spice to the fixture.
“A lot of the players know each other and are friends – although I’m sure that out on the pitch on Sunday that won’t show.
“A number of their players have also played for Pompey, so both sides will know each other’s games and I know they have been to watch us a few times this season, but hopefully we’ll have a few surprises for them on Sunday.
“We’re all fired up for the game and we’re looking to regain the trophy after losing it last year.”
The match will be played at Westleigh Park on Sunday, March 29. Kick-off is 11am.
