Hreidarsson Agrees One-Year Deal

Hermann Hreidarsson has agreed a new one-year deal with Pompey. The defender has opted to extend his stay at Fratton Park until the summer of 2010 following two successful seasons at the club. The contract includes the option of another year at Pompey if Hreidarsson plays a certain number of games next season. Blues executive chairman Peter Storrie is delighted to have secured the left-back’s signature. He said: ‘Hermann’s been looking at his options and he’s decided he wants to stay. “So we’ve agreed a one-year contract with an option of another year if he plays a certain number of games. “He’s very strong and fit and had a great second half of last season. Hermann’s a real character and a great influence in the dressing room. So we’re pleased to have him back.” The 34-year-old has been an inspirational figure since joining Pompey from Charlton in June 2007. His all-action, never-say-die performances at left back have made him a fans’ favourite at Fratton Park. The Iceland international was a key member of Pompey’s FA Cup-winning side in 2008, also helping the Blues to their highest-ever Premier League finish of eighth. And after a spell on the sidelines he returned to the side in the second half of last season to help lift Pompey away from the relegation zone with his ultra-committed displays and crucial goals. The former Crystal Palace, Brentford, Wimbledon and Ipswich stopper has scored six times in 69 appearances for the Blues. He will now be looking to retain his place at left back when Pompey’s new Premier League season starts against Fulham at Fratton Park on Saturday, August 15.
